Host range and control studies of stem bleeding disease of coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) in the Philippines

Observation on the earliest occurrence of stem bleeding caused by Thielaviopsis paradoxa (de Seynes) von Hohnel in the genebank collection at the PCA [Philippine Coconut Authority] Zamboanga Research Center was observed in 1984 on some local cultivars. However, from surveys in 1991 up to 1993 it was observed that Catigan green dwarf had the highest number of disease incidence (18, 48, and 74 cases respectively, out of 895 palms). In the 1994 survey, disease occurrence was prevalent in MAWA with 98 cases followed by Catigan 96 cases. Both tall and dwarf populations and most especially hybrids were affected by the disease. The five coconut cultivars/hybrids tested were all susceptible to the disease. MYD x Hijo Tall (JVA-1) hybrid showed the most extensive damage of the central core tissues of the stem. Infection developed in banana, cacao, papaya and pineapple fruits but not in sweetpotato when inoculated with T. paradoxa isolates from coconut. Foselty-Al, captafol and benomyl were effective in suppressing mycelial growth of T. paradoxa in culture and preventing lesion development in the inoculated stem whereas chlorothonil and metalaxyl were not effective
