Dry matter partitioning and petiolar NO3+ - N and NH4+ - N contents of cotton at four available soil moisture levels

The research was conducted at CRDI [Cotton Research and Development Institute] Regional Research Station in San Juan, Ilocos Sur [Philippines] to characterize the agro-physiological responses of cotton under four available soil moisture (ASM) levels, namely, 50, 60, 70, and 80 percent. Total dry matter weight among treatments varied at 70 DAE with the 70 percent ASM registering the heaviest. However, the 80 percent ASM registered the heaviest dry matter at 90 and 110 DAE. Leaf area index was insignificant among treatments. At 110 DAE, the reproductive to vegetative ratio was highest in the 50 percent ASM. The ratio decreased as the ASM increased. Virtually, no petiolar nitrate - N but highest ammonium - N contents were noted in the 50 percent ASM. Highest nitrate - N and lowest ammonium - N were noted in the 70 percent ASM at 70 DAE. Total petiolar nitrogen of both forms was maximum at 70 percent ASM and least in the 80 percent ASM. Among treatments, water use efficiency was inversely related to the fruiting efficiency while no significant differences were observed on seedcotton yield. Results indicated that cotton can agronomically perform well at 50 percent ASM level under growing conditions similar to the experimental site
