Farmers' perception and varietal adoption in the rainfed lowlands of Laos

The rice production systems in Laos remain predominantly subsistence-oriented. The adoption of modern varieties and component technologies is limited only to irrigated areas. Most of the farmers grow both traditional and modern variety with less than 10 percent of farmers growing modern varieties only in the rainfed. The percentage area under modern varieties is lower than the percentage of farmers adopting modern varieties indicating that farmers who have adopted modern variety grow it only on a part of their farm. Farmers' perception on the performance of modern variety indicated the need to improve the varietal performance on several aspects, such as improved tolerance to pest, drought and lodging could increase farmers' acceptability of modern variety. An improvement in the grain characteristics especially of the medium and short duration varieties would also make modern variety more acceptable to farmers. The adoption function of modern variety indicates that farm size, access to credit and access to market are important in determining the probability of adoption. The proportion of medium terraces, farm area and yield risk have significant negative effects on the extent of adoption
