Seed yield of wheat as affected by nitrogen levels under the arid zone condition of Dera Ismail Khan [Pakistan]

The response of nitrogenous fertilizer on yield and yield components of wheat in the clay soil was investigated during 1993-94 and 1994-95. The six treatments used were; 20, 40, 60 and 80 N with basal dose of 40 P kg/ha including control. Fertilizer applied @ 20 + 40 N.P kg/ha appeared significantly the best rate which produced a greater seed weight with maximum seed yield during 1993-94 while this response was greater @ 50 + 40 NP kg/ha during 1994-95. This different response at different rate might be attributed to rainfall distribution and utilization of soil moisture during both the growing seasons.
