This field research was conducted on a tropical Ultisol (25 to 35 percent slope) at Batac, Ilocos Norte [Philippines]. Four hedgerow treatments: hedgerow alone (HA), hedgerow + ground barrier (H + GB), hedgerow + mulch (H + M) and hedgerow + ground barrier + mulch (H + GB + M) were compared with no hedgerow treatment (Ho) in terms of run-off and sediment yield production, soil moisture status, nutrient losses, residual soil fertility and productivity of the alley crop. The hedgerow treatments were effective in reducing run-off and sediment yield production. Relative to Ho, run-off reduction by treatments with hedgerow was: Ha, 53.86 percent; H + GB, 79.05 percent; H + M, 77.12 percent; and H + GB + M, 85.94 percent. In terms of sediment yield, reduction was Ha, 78.43 percent; H + GB, 96.76 percent; H + M, 96.00 percent, and H + GB + M. 99.24 percent. Further, nutrient losses (kg/ha) through the eroded sediments were also higher in Ho: organic matter, 351.77; P, 0.354, and K, 5.161. These values were 4, 18 to 29, and 57 to 117 times more than Ha, H + GB and H + M, and H + GB + M plots, respectively. Available P after cropping increased in plots with hedgerows but decreased in Ho. For organic matter content, an increasing trend was apparent in H + GB, H + M and H + GB + M plots. Exchangeable K increased in Ha, H + GB and H + GB + M but decreased in Ho and H + M. Soil moisture content also differed significantly and was generally higher in plots with hedgerows. However, during period of interspersed dry spells, the pattern of soil moisture were more complex. As regards alley crop productivity, rice grain yield was Ho, 0.69; Ha, 0.913; H + GB, 1.158; H + M, 1.44; and H + GB + M, 1.34 t/ha
