Design and manufacture of processing equipment rely heavily on process data as well as basic information on existing hardware. This work aims to assist processing equipment designers and developers as well as researchers involved in the food processing industry by providing them with the information on the existing and commercially used processing equipment. The study obtained equipment information such as physical size, capacity, power requirement, manufacturers and others. Details of related processes were also recorded and sketches of equipment were made. The entire work may be divided into two parts: Mechanization in the Rice-based Food Industries and Mechanization in the Non-Rice based Food Industries. The present paper will deal with the mechanization of the rice-based food industries. The survey of food processing industries in Luzon particularly in Laguna, Batangas, Bulacan, Quezon, Rizal, Cavite, Pangasinan, Benguet, Tarlac and Pampanga [Philippines] revealed 926 local food processors. Of the many food establishments surveyed in Luzon, 27.0 percent are involved in processing rice-based food products. These include rice noodle, puffed rice, rice flakes, rice kroepeck, rice cakes, fresh rice noodles, rice wine and many more. For these different food products, eighteen different types of equipment were found in thirty etablishments that have been studied. As a result of this work, major areas/equipment have been identified for further studies which include: improvement of puffing gun, manual noodle extruder, flour mill and packaging
