Giant bamboo clonal propagation technology

The technology uses rooting hormone and a clonal chamber to increase the percent survival of 3-5 day-old bamboo branches from 10 percent to 90 percent. Usually giant bamboo branches dehydrate if not potted immediately after cutting. This technology makes possible the transport of giant bamboo branches for planting in other areas. Giant bamboo branches are culm like, having nodal portions with roots on their basal part. The process of propagation by branches is a follows: a. Select branches that have 2-3 nodes from 3-4 year-old culms. At least 10 branches can be collected from one culm. Place the branches is wet jute sack; b. Pack the planting materials carefully in boxes with wet sawdust before transporting; c. When they reach their destination, soak the bottom of the branches in a mixture of 5 percent-10 percent rotting hormone for at least 23-5 minutes; d. Pot the branches in polyethylene bags using ordinary garden soil; e. Place the potted branches inside a clonal chamber. Cover the chamber with plastic to maintain high relative humidity inside. The cuttings must have 30 percent-40 percent sunlight; f. Transfer the seedlings to a rearing shed when their new branches reach 1 foot; g. Gradually expose to sunlight for 2 weeks; h. Seedlings should be placed directly under the sunlight for another 2 weeks before outplanting. This technology facilitates the mass production of giant bamboo seedlings in areas far from the sources of planting stocks. It also saves on transport cost since branches are cheaper to transport than rooted seedlings and take up less space. Giant bamboo is the species preferred for domestic use since its culm is bigger than most bamboos at 20 m tall and 20-25 cm in diameter. The cost of establishing a 1-ha giant bamboo plantation at 10 m x 10 m spacing is P10,600. The total cost for 10 years is P55,150 with a net income of P284,850 and a return on investment of 516 percent
