A study was carried out to assess the potential of antagonistic bacterium Bacillus subtitles for biological control of Bipolaris sorokiniana, which causes common root and black point of cereals. In in vitro experiments, Bacillus subtilis was found to negatively affect germ tube length, hyphal development, and radial mycelial growth of B. sorokiniana. A pre-sowing treatment of barley seed with a cell suspension of Bacillus subtilis was found to improve crop yield. Inoculation with Bacillus subtilis, after covering soil with green manure, increased the phytosanitary effect of the soil, increased plant height, and improved seed quality. These improvements led to a decrease in ratings of common root rot to 6 percent and disease severity to 32 percent. Crop yield increased by 35 percent and 1000-grain weight by 45 percent. Furthermore, the amount of seed infected by black point (B. sorokiniana) fell below significant levels.
