Odour screening tests of poultry and pig breeding technology

Animal farms pollute the environment in several ways as well as with the odour of stinking substances. People become accustomed to odour, and after a certain time the same mixture no longer causes a stimulus. The Hungarian standard prescribes an exact method for odour screening tests. Our testing procedures were carried out in poultry and pig stables on the basis of that standard. Our aim was to find links between the origin-emission of the odour and the applied keeping technology. We have found in the case of both animals that the intensity of the odour is influenced by the age, bedding type, dung process, dung removal and by the foddering. The wet deep bedding had the higher odour effect with poultries while the intensity of the odour was lower in several radiating heated beddings. In pig breeding the determinative factor was the quantity of manure on the flooring but the content of the fodder turned out to be also an influential element. On the basis of the test results and the EU standard, by being aware of the applied technology, the protective distance of the animal-keeping farms from residential areas (or dwelling houses) can be determined
