The effect of height and density of red clover and intergeneric grass hybrid Felina mixture on their first cut yield

In small plot experiments on two experimental sites (200 and 700 m above sea level) with two sowing proportions (60% and 40%) of red clover at first cut of second and third year of vegetation, the effects of plant height, number of stems of two red clover varieties (Sigord 4n, Viglana 2n) and intergeneric grass hybrid Felina (Lolium multiflorum x Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) on binary mixture dry matter yield were studied. Tetraploid red clover variety Sigord was higher and more competitive against intergeneric hybrid Felina plants than diploid Viglana. The yield of mixture with Sigord variety on the lower site depended on grass stem number in the stand. On the contrary, the yield of mixture with diploid Viglana content was more influenced by the red clover component, on the lower site by density and on the higher site by red clover plant height. Yield increase from the mixture was reached only on a more humid site. Under dry conditions the monoculture of intergeneric hybrid Felina gave the highest yield. The number of red clover stems and especially the grass stem number in the stands were the means of adaptability to changing conditions
