Increase of protein content in maize by genetic methods

Protein content in maize grain is possible to increase by distant hybridization of cultivated and wild species (teosinta and tripsacum). Opaque-2 and floury-2 endosperm mutants increase lysine and tryptophan. IHP-line is a genetic resource of higher protein content. Negative correlations between yield and proteins and lysine content restrains excessive exploitation of the hybrids with higher protein and lysine content. Disadvantages of hybrids characterized by high lysine content e.g. grain cracking at harvesting and storing are diminished by grain-cob mash preparation. The authors designed the project of protein content increase by means of hybridization of selected cultivars which already show higher protein content in grain in the year of hybridization
