Evaluation of effectiveness of non-traditional American foulbrood control in Slovak Republic
1997
Jendrejak, R.
Efficiency of damping the American foulbrood by means of non-traditional alternative methods introduced officially to Slovakia in 1990 was evaluated. After the disease is found in the colonies, only the clinically and bacteriologically positive colonies together with their hives are burnt. The other colonies are sanitized by shifting them into cleaned and disinfected hives on comb foundations; disinfection and sanitation are performed in the facilities. After these measures the antibiotic preparation Tylancel pulv. ad us. vet. is applied at a dose of 0.5 g effective substance, 3 times by spraying at 7 day intervals, or in a dose of 1.5 g into the feed, divided into 2-3 doses. This preparation is applied after the honey flow is finished and the honey is extracted. The use of this method is conditioned by low extensity of infection (to 10% of the number of colonies), early detection of the infection (only 2-3 cells positive on the colony), and good hygienic level in the facilities. We were able to eliminate fully the focus of infection (Tab.I) or to decrease their number significantly (Tab.II) by using this method in experimental apiaries in the Spisska Nova Ves and Poprad districts. According to veterinary data there were no focuses of infection (number of focuses in 1990 was 34) in the whole Spisska Nova Ves district in 1996; the number of focuses decreased from 114 to 2 in the Poprad district in 1996, representing sanitation of 98.2%. The heavy increase of the number of focuses stopped in Slovakia after 1990, (fig.1), and a marked decrease has been noted since 1995. The advantage of this method is the recovery of apiaries at relativly low losses of colonies (in experimental apiaries in both districts 1663 colonies were protected from liquidation), and in markedly lower costs for destroying colonies
