The influence of industrial emissions from an aluminium producing plant on selected biochemical and hematological parameters in sheep

The dynamics of selected parameters of haematological, proteinaceous and hepatic profiles in sheep reared between 9-15km from an aluminium producing plant were observed over period of 12 months. All the values of the haematological parameters determined (haemoglobin, haematocrit, erythrocytes and leukocytes) were in the normal physiological range throughout the entire period of investigation. Marginal hypoproteinaemia occurred in animals in all flocks observed with no significant correlation with the distance from the industrial plant in April (54.57 plus or minus 4.94 to 63.64 plus or minus 9.78 g l*[-1]). The levels of total immunoglobulins indicating marginal hypoglobulinaemia in sheep were observed in the following flocks: 15 km south of the emission centre in October, 9 km south and 11 km north in April, and in all flocks located north and the one located 9 km south of the plant in September. All albumin values observed were within the normal physiological range as were the activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. Samples taken in April showed that in the majority of flocks the activities of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and alkaline phosphatase were outside the normal physiological range and the sheep exhibited hyperbilirubinaemia. The results show that the industrial production had no significant effect on parameters of haematological, proteinaceous and hepatic profiles in sheep reared in the deposition area of the aluminium plant. An unambiguous correlation between the mentioned parameters and the direction of sampling locations or their distance from the industrial centre was not detected
