Pityogenes chalcographus (Coleoptera, Scolytidae) - an indicator of man-made changes in Norway spruce stands

Bark beetle complexes were investigated in Norway spruce stands affected by air pollution and insect outbreaks in the Sudeten Mountains (Poland, Czech Republic). Pityogenes chalcographus was the most frequent species, being a leader of the bark beetle complex, and ten years after an outbreak its population remains high. The species is able to kill trees of considerable dimensions and to win in space competition with other bark beetles. The causes of this phenomenon, related to human activity and recent forest management errors, are discussed
