Review article: Vitamin E and selenium in sheep

A fat-soluble dietary factor in green plants was reported in the 1920s to be effective in preventing reproduction failures in mammals,and this was ultimately designated as vitamin E. There are four forms of tocopherol (alpha, beta, gamma and delta), structurally similar except in the number of methyl group. The oxygen stability is markedly increased by acylation of the free phenolic hydroxyl group, and much of the commercial vitamin E products are in the form of tocopherol esters. Vitamin E interacts with selenium containing glutathione peroxidase to prevent the oxidative breakdown of the cell membrane. The effect of age, season, and stage of gravidity on alpha-tocopherol in sheep was qualitatively elaborated. There are many clinical signs and histo-pathological changes associated with deficiencies of vitamin E and/or selenium, which are described in this review
