The effect on metabolism, egg production and egg shell quality of dietary aluminium in laying hens

Twenty-four Nick Brown laying hens at 25 weeks of age were used to determine the effect of dietary aluminium on metabolism, egg production and egg-shell quality. The experiment was conducted for 40 days. Dietary aluminium supplements for the experimental group were given as 2 gm/kg aluminium in the form of aluminium sulphate. Individual egg production records were kept daily throughout the experiment. On days 0, 20 and 40, body weight data were recorded, eggs were collected and blood samples were taken. The collected eggs were weighed and the egg specific-gravity was determined. Shell thickness and weight were measured. Alanine amino-transferase (ALT), aspartate amino-transerase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), cholesterol, calcium (Ca), inorganic phosphorous (Pi) determinations were made in sera. Aluminium analyses were done of sera and eggs collected on day 40, and in the basic diet and drinking water. There was no difference in the body weight between the control and experimental groups. Egg-shell thickness was significantly reduced by dietary aluminium on day 20 (p0.01), but not on day 40. Egg-shell weight alone had decreased on day 40 (p0.05). No differences in serum ALT, LDH, cholesterol, Ca and Pi levels appeared between groups. Egg production was not affected by dietary aluminium. Dietary aluminium significantly affected aluminium levels in serum and eggs. These results show that high levels of dietary Al can have negative effects on the egg-shell quality of laying hens
