Accumulation of the extracellular proteins localized in intercellular spaces of barley primary leaves was examined in aluminium-sprayed seedlings. Intercellular washing fluid was obtained from leaves by infiltration with 100 mmol.l sup(-1) citrate-phosphate buffer, pH 2.8 containing 15 mmol.l sup(-1) mercaptoethanol and proteins analyzed by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Al-induced accumulation patterns of extracellular proteins were very similar to those in powdery mildew-inoculated leaves. First detectable differences in comparison with control plants were observed after spraying the leaves with 1.0 and 10.0 mmol.l sup(-1) AlCl3. These quantitative differences in accumulation of proteins induced with Al treatment were very similar to accumulation of proteins induced by avirulent races of powdery mildew. Qualitative differences in induction and accumulation of PR have not been detected between barley cultivars Novum and Ricardo
