Role of woman in native chicken pilot program

During October 1985 to December 1986, Northeast Regional Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Center and Thai-German Animal Health Project has planned to improve poultry health and productivity in villages by introducing some simple inexpensive and practical technology such as nutritional supplement battery and appropiate management combined with vaccination and deworming as preventive measures. Fourty-four participants [31 males and 13 females] of 3 villages in Borabue district, Mahasarakam Province were chosen to participate in this Native Chicken Pilot Program. The families monitored their own chickens so as to find out the input/output relation require for successful poultry raising. The participants in all 3 project villages were questioned using questionaire. The results showed that labour and decision making such as management and financial on poultry raising are mostly done by men 5 women are the decision makers and women share the decision making process in other 23 families. Although only 13 women participate with this poultry pilot program, women were more enthusiastic and cooperative in comparision to men. Moreover, women can monitor their own chicks very well despite their relatively poor literacy.
