Isolation of photosynthetic bacteria in wastewater from seafood processing plants

Four strains of photosynthetic bacteria (T6, R4, R5 and R7) were insolated from fourteen wastewater samples collected from three seafood processing plants. All strains belong to Family Rhodospirillaceae, the purple non-sulfur bacteria and were identified as Rhodocyclus gelatinosus. Cultivation in synthetic media (G5) under four differen conditions relealed that under anaerobic-light (800-1,000 Lux) condition, the bacteria contained 86 and 87 % higher level of carotenoid and bacteriochlorophyll (11.1-12.6 and 102.5-108.1 mg/g dry cell weight, respectively) than the values obtained from aerobic conditions. However, under aerobic condition, these cultures gave miximum dry cell weight in the range of 1.70-2.32 g/L which were 22-38 % higher than those obtained under anaerobic condition. In addition, the specific growth rates (0.04-0.0)/h were 2 times higher when compared to values from anaerobic cultivation (0.02-0.03)/h. The protein content of all strains was in the range of 32.7-48.3 % and COD reduced 23.7-38.9 %. No growth was observed under anaerobic-dark condition.
