Effect of plant densities on pod yield of groundnut cv. Khon Kaen 60-1

To study the plant density and the appropriate row spacing of groundnut cv. Khon Kaen 60-1. Row spacing of 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm apart with 20,000, 40,000 and 60,000 plants/rai were applied under 2 levels of soil fertilities; with and without chemical fertilizer. Field conditions at Kalasin, Mahasarakham and Roi-et Experiment Stations were used for planting between May and September 1991. Results indicated that increasing plant densities from 20,000 to 40,000 plants/rai increased pod yield but pod yield did not differ when increased number of plants from 40,000 to 60,000 plants/rai. A greater pod yield resulted from more pod per square m. Increase row spacing from 40 to 50 cm caused lower pot yield at Kalasin but pod yield was similar at Mahasarakham and Roi-et. Although the lowest plant density (20,000 plants/rai) produced higher pod/plant but lesser pod per square m than 40,000 and 60,000 plants/rai and that pod yield was poorer. Seed size and shelling percentage depend on number of pod/plant. Seed size and shelling percentage were less in the lowest plant density because they produced higher pod/plant. More soil fertility resulted in increase the total biomass but there was no significant difference on pod yield. No interactions between soil fertility and plant density occured in all locations. It can be concluded from above results that the appropriate row spacing of groundnut cv Khon Kaen 60-1 was 30 to 40 cm apart and plant density should be 40,000 plant/rai.
