The investigations into the autochthonous allium have shown that certain species like Allium vineale L., Allium scorodoprasum L., Allium sphaerocephalum L., Allium rotundum L. subsp. waldsteinii (G. Dom.) Richter, and Allium atroviolaceum Boiss of the section Allium including garlic, therefore being close garlic relatives, has survived in the Vojvodina Province (Serbia, Yugoslavia). Steppe habitats of these alliums have been severelly cultivated thus making many of them rare residents of Vojvodina flora. Knowledge of their biological features, their area range, and ecological conditions of their habitats offer the basis for their conservation in their natural habitats. As wild relatives of cultivated garlic they represent important genetic resources thus their conservation and possible reintroduction is required.
