Cytogenetic examination of Stizostedion volgensis were performed using specimens collected from four localities on the Danube, near Beska, Zemun, Visnjica and Grocka (Yugoslavia) during three consecutive years (1986, 1987 and 1988). Karyotype analysis showed that the diploid chromosome number was 2n=48. The karyotype consisted of 8 pairs of submetacentric, 6 pairs of subacrocentric and 10 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes. The highest frequency of structural chromosome changes (break and gap-type) occurred in the fishes caught at the localities downstream of Belgrade and the mounth of the river Sava, near Visnjica and Grocka. On the basis of previous criteria and the proposed critical level (3.0-3.5) the values for break and gap-type chromosome changes that were above these, point to the presence of genotoxic agents in the river water. The results indicate the probable existence of a genotoxic risk, as these localities appear to be periodically or permanently contaminated with genotoxic agents.
