Detection of toxigenic properties and haemagglutinine of Bordetella bronchiseptica strains

A total of 18 Bordetella bronchiseptica strains, isolated from nasal swabs of pigs, were investigated. Investigated Bordetella bronchiseptica strains showed different ability of toxin production. Using mouse mortality assay, 9 strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica were described as highly-toxic, 6 strain as medium-toxic, and only 3 strains as non-toxic. Utilizing skin test on guinea pigs 6 strains were determined as highly-toxic, 8 as medium-toxic and 4 strains as non-toxic. Both methods have shown similar sensitivity, but skin test on guinea pigs is methodologically more advantageous. Strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica, described as highly-toxic, have caused a significant spleen atrophy in mice, while weakly or non-toxic strains resulted in a spleen hypertrophy. Investigated strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica in phase 1 have shown different haemagglutinative ability (1:8 to 1:128). A significant decrease of the haemagglutinine titer (1:8 to 1:16) was evident when a cell-free sonicated extract was applied.
