In order to study the optimal strategy of sheep production development, it was necessary to take into consideration sheep production trends to date, the theory dealing with the essence of strategic development in general, define the strategy of sheep production development, include the organizational and technological factors affecting the results of sheep production and determine the competitiveness between sheep production and goat and cattle production under the conditions of a mountain family farm. Considering the organizational and technological factors affecting the results of sheep production, major emphasis was placed on the utilization period of breeding sheep, sheep fertility, culling percentage of breeding offspring, sheep body weight, capacity of a sheep farm and the degree of its utilization. Mountain family farm models were developed using the linear programming method in order to study the competitiveness of sheep production
