Association of some metric characters in groundnut

A field experiment was conducted in 1995 at Werer Research Center to study association of characters in groundnut (Arachis hypogae L.). Fortythree genotypes were grown in RCBD with 3 replication. Records were made on fourteen characters. Correlation and path-coefficients were estimated using standard procedures. Pod and kernel yields were positively and significantly correlated with a number of characters. However, path-coefficient analyses indicated that only recovery percentage, number of kernels and hundred kernel weight had positive direct effects on pod yield or seed yield while protein content, days from flowering to maturity, total number of pods, shelling percentage, hundred kernel weight and dry pod yield exerted positive direct effects on kernel yield . Days to maturity, total number of pods, protein content and shelling percentage posted negatively high direct effects on pod yield but none of the characters had effect on kernel yield. A number of components also indirectly affected pod and kernel yields both positively and negatively. Oil content was non-sitnificantly correlated with pod and kernel yields but positively and significantly correlated with days to flowering, total number of pods, number od kernels and shelling percentage. Protein content was negatively correlated with all traits. A number of component traits also interrelated positively and negatively with one another.
