Nutritional status and optimum NP rate studies for different organic fertilizer sources

Experiments on organic fertilizer sources of sisal waste, coffee pulp/husk, farm yard manure, and bone meal where conducted to evaluate their nutritional composition followed by biological test on A-511 maize variety under controlled condition. Analytical results indicated that highest value of p (15.66 percent P2 O50 and lowest value of P (0.12 percent P2 O5) were obtained from bone meal and coffee pulp/husk, respectively. Highest value of N with 2.2 percent N. Sisal and farm yard manure were lowest in their N content which was 1.4 percent each. Based on analytical results, optimum NP rates for maximum yield established for sisal, bone meal, farm yard manure, and coffee pulp/husk were: 3.4, 5.8; 0.90, 0.14; 3.4, 1.33; and 2.2; 17.5 tons/ha, respectively. Dry matter yield of 3.13 g/pot was obtained from all the treatments which was superior over check which yielded only 2.34 g/pot. Trend on the leaf yield increase was observed with the increase on fertilizer rates. Tissue analysis showed that the NP values ranged from 1.50-2.80 and 0.128-0.226 percent, respectively. From these experiments, it can be condluded that organic fertilizer sources might substitute commercial fertilizers which at present farmers can't afford due to their high price. Organic fertilizer sources tested in this study might help to improve soil physical properties and also alleviate the effect of urea acidificationon woil.
