Sowing date and plant population effects on seed cotton yield at Abobo

An experiment was conducted at Abobo Research Centre, South Western Ethiopia, to determine optimum planting date (PD) and plant population using three varieties of cotton. A split-split-plot design with varieties in the main plot. Three inta-row spacings (12.5-, 25- and 50 cm) in the sub-plots and five planting dates (May 12, May 22, June 1. June 11 and June 21) in the sub-sub-plots in three replications was used. The main effect of planting date was significant each year. A consistent and significant variety by PD interaction was also observed. Acala 1517/70 yielded best when planted between May 16 and May 23. The optimum PD for Albar-637 and Reba B.50 occurred a week after that for Acala 1517/70. Differences in PD accounted for 77 to 99 of the variation in crop yields, The wider intra-row spacing of 50 cm (25000 plants/ha) gave better yields than either the 25- or 12.5 cm intra-row spacing. the interaction of spacing with either variety or PD was not significant in any one year.
