An attempt to distinguish plant response to soil pH from the response to Ca2+ when liming acid soils

A pot experiment with alfalfa was carried out on a pseudopodsoilc soil. The soil was neutralised with CaCO3, MgCO3, K2CO3 or Na2CO3. There were 2 another treatments with CaCl2 and Ca(NO3)2. After harvesting dry matter yield of overground parts and roots was weighed and contents of Ca, Mg, K, Na, Al, Fe, Mn,Zn, Cu were checked. According to the comparison between the relative yields and relative contents of neutralising cation, the plant responded most positive to Ca and Mg, less positive to K, zero to Na. In acid conditions the response to Cl' amd NO3' was negative. In the point of optimal pH value yield were the higest. But in case of a highest relative yield the relative content of the corresponding neutralising cation was lowest. So it is seems that raising soil fertility by liming is connected with physical environment of roots rather than with chemical reactions of the metabolism.
