Energy balance in present day sugar beet production techniques

Energy requirement in the form of fuel is a cost consideration which has a lasting influence on the crop eco-balance. In field trials, diesel fuel requirement for the entire field production was determined by three field investigations (conventional sowing, mulch sowing with seedbed preparation and mulch sowing without seedbed preparation). Compared to conventional agricultural techniques, energy requirement can thus be reduced by 3.1 GJ per ha, i.e. 14 per cent using mulch sowing (mulch sowing without seedbed preparation: 18.4 GJ per ha). Taking into consideration the various sugar beet yields, the input/output ratio of 1:11.8 in conventional sowing can be improved to 1:12.3 using mulch sowing with seedbed preparation.
