192 dry Black and White cows kept in tie-stall barns during previous lactation and walking only within a limited space have been included in the study. The cows were divided into three groups, as follows: Ist control group - kept in the same housing with free access to 6m2 lot, per cow for walking, II and III group - kept under the same conditions plus additional daily forced exercise. The forced walking of dry cows at 2 and 4 km per day results in decrease of retained placenta cases and in a tendency towards reduction of calving difficulties, compared to cows that had only a limited space for free motion. The 4 km daily force motion during the dry period with the unaltered feeding level results in more days open and reduced milk yield during following lactation.
