Sterile F1 hybrids from crosses between tetraploid rye and hexaploid triticale were further crossed with hexaploid triticale. It was found that the total chromosome number (2n) was soon stabilized at a tetraploid level, since 1.11% to 11.36% of the cells in F3BC1 had more than 28 chromosomes. In the following generation only 3.92% to 4.21% of the cells investigated had 30 or 32 chromosomes. Meiosis in both generations studied was characterized by univalents in diakinesis and metaphase I, as well as by micronuclei in telophase II. The mean number of grains per main spike in F3BC1 varied from 11.69 to 26.03, while in F4BC1 it was increased and reached 31.67 to 40.30 grains.
