Age and growth studies of Hyperopisus bebe (Lacepede) (Mormyridae) in Lekki Lagoon, Nigeria
1998
Oben, P. (University of Buea (Cameroon). Dept. of Geology and Environmental Sciences) | Ugwumba, A. | Fagade, S.
The total length of specimens examined varied between 14 and 45 cm. Cyclical rings of otoliths comprised micro-increments which were interpreted as daily growth rings and used to evaluate the age of fish. The maximum age estimated through this method was found to be 40.47 months. Growth rings (lunar rings and annuli) were also recorded on the opercular bone. In H. bebe, the mean number of lunar rings in year class 1 was 14 more or less 0.08 with a mean total length of 24.48 more or less 0.29 cm. The maximum age estimated through the opercular bone method was found to be 3 years. The von Bertalanffy growth model was applied to mean lengths for ages estimated through the otolith and back calculation ageing methods. Growth equations are given.
