In the article a review about the metabolism of purine derivatives in the ruminants is given. Possibilities of estimating the amount of microbial protein synthesized in the rumen by the use of urinary excretion of purine derivatives are summarized. The experiments were carried out with adult rams fed silage ad libitum. The results indicated that there was a high correlation between urinary excreted allantoin and dry matter intake (r=0.953) and between urinary excreted uric acid and dry matter intake (r=0.923). Correlation was high also between urinary excreted allantoin and protein intake (r=0.951) and between urinary excreted uric acid and protein intake (r=0.912)
