Rye as a feed for swine
1999
Nigul, L. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
During the one-month trial period the ration consisting of Provimi enzyme Provizym-cera and 50 per cent of rye guaranteed a very high growth performance of pigs (955g; 2.55 kg/kg), which did not differ from that of the pigs fed barley diet. 17 per cent decrease (to 792g and 3.27 kg/kg) in performance, observed in the following fattening period of the trial, brings into question the necessity of long-term feeding of the above-mentioned ration. The lean meat content of the pig carcasses of both groups was practically similar (59.8 and 58.2 per cent). Obviously the inhibitors in rye might have a certain effect. During the growing and fattening period from 44 to 102 kg the average gain of the pigs of the rye group was 866 g with feed consumption 3.18 kg/kg (P0.05), which is considered rather good fattening performance in our conditions
