Effect of harvesting date on yield and quality of cabbage

The objective of the study was to find out the proper harvesting date for best quality and head yield of cabbage cultivar KR-1 planted at high elevation. The study was conducted at experimental garden of Berastagi Agricultural Technology Research and Development Instalation, from August 1994 to January 1995. Harvesting date was the main factor to be studied. The treatment was land in a Randomized Block Design with three replicates. Observation was conducted of plant growth and crop yield and quality. The results showed that the picking time of high elevation cabbage plant was at 80 to 95 days after replanting of 28 days seedling. At such plant development stage, the head weight ranged from 896.2 to 1.966.7 g each or equal to yield of 26.9 to 39.5 t/ha. The plantation suffered 0-3.95 percent of dead plants due to diseases and 0-7.89 percent of cracked heads. Diameter, height, total soluble solid, and hardness of harvested head were 17.43 to 22.43 cm, 10.3 to 11.7 cm, 4.6 to 4.9 percent, and 22.2 to 29.4 lb/cm2, respectively. The harvesting can be done earlier or be delayed within the period of recommended method, depends on the market price of cabbage heads and the possibility earns high benefit for its cabbage agribusiness
