The kind and composition of food of Macaca ochreata at Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park, South East Sulawesi

The endemic Macaca ochreata of South East Sulawesi have good population condition in the savannah mixed forest of Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park. The monkey grouped in 9-56 individuals with an average population was 34 individuals per Km2. The large groups consist of 64,3 percent of young individuals. The M. ochreata is frugiovorous monkey where the composition of diet consist of 61.25 fruits, 22.5 percents leaves, 7.85 percent of seeds and 8.4 percent invertebrates. The dominant (46.2 percent) trees as a feeding sources among the seventh of the main fruits trees were (Artocarpus teysmannii, Dillenia serrata, Xanthostenon confertifolium, Garcinia celebica, Eugenia subglauca and Gerbera manghas) is A. teysmannii. This fruit was consumed in the morning and late afternoon and the trees also used as the sleeping trees (height over 20 m). A. teysmannii fruit contained 14.3 percent of protein and 0.69 index of protein/crude fibre. The protein and mineral content of the A. teysmannii fruit were higher than other fruit trees consumed by monkey on December. Monkeys also consumed the leaves and bud of fig trees where the concentration of protein and mineral content similar with that of A. teysmannii fruit. Fruit with high water and minerals content consumed by monkey in the midday, mainly Vittis trifolium, a herb plant growth in the wetland area.
