[Use of light soils in agriculture]

Light sand, sandy loam and gravel soils prevail in a large part of Lithuania. Scientific investigation on light soils was carried out in many research stations of the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture. On the basis of experimental findings the technology of growing of light soil crops has been prepared. Experimental data shows, that fertility of the light soils can be improved by soil cultivation, proper fertilization, liming and using other means. According to the data of experimental findings winter rye, oats, buckwheat, potatoes, lupines, seradella, peas, fodder root crops, sainfoin, bird's foot trefoil, red fescue and other perennial grasses can be grown succesfully on the light soils.
