Pea variety "Alma" of the origin and characteristics

Variety "Alama" is red-violet flowered pea (Pisum sativum ssp. punctatum Ted., f. tenax) bred at the Priekuli Plant Breeding Station. It was selected from the progeny of a cross between hibridline 726-31 and cultivar "Rota" (1978). In 1981 single plant selctions were made from F3 populations. During 1982-1987 selected line was evaluated in small plot nurseries and during 1988-1990 - in competitive trials for seed and greenmass yield and agronomic traits. During 1991-1992 "Alma" was evaluated in the State Variety Testing station and was included in the Recommended list for growing in Latvia in 1995. "Alma" has a hight protein content in seed and greenmass and is recommended for use an animal feed.
