Performance of bivoltine silkworm as affected by different kinds and rates of paraformaldehyde mixtures for fungal disease prevention

The study sought to identify the most effective kind and rate of paraformaldehyde mixtures and to determine the interaction effect of the different kinds and rates of paraformaldehyde mixtures on fungal disease prevention. Silkworm disinfected with wood ash (T3) obtained the highest shell weight, number of cocoons harvested, cocoon yield per box, and survival rate. Wood ash as paraformaldehyde mixture also significantly registered the lowest percentage of fungal incidence but was comparable to burnt rice hull (T1) and lime powder (T2). The result indicate that wood ash application (T3) plays a significant role in reducing silkworm diseases and enhances greater cocoon production. Application rate of 2 percent paraformaldehyde contributed largely to the increase in weight of 10 matured larvae and reduction of mortality rate. Silkworm larvae disinfected with 98 percent wood ash + 2 percent paraformaldehyde produced the highest number of cocoons harvested (185 cocoons), survival rate (92.67 percent), percent disease control (16.91 percent), and had the lowest mortality rate (7.33 percent). The kinds of paraformaldehyde mixture and rates of paraformaldehyde affected the number of cocoons harvested, survival rate, mortality rate, and percent disease control. The silkworms disinfected with these different mixtures performed significantly better than those that were not applied with disinfectant
