Distribution patterns of seaweeds in the Philippines
1994
Fortes, M.D. | Tiquio, J.P.
The algal flora of 59 sites comprising 10 provinces were surveyed from November 1987 to May 1989 using the transect-quadrat method. One hundred and fifty-eight macrobenthic species broken down into 70 greens, 31 browns, 53 reds, and 4 unidentified species were recorded. This number comprises 16.4 percent of the total number of seaweed species reported from the Philippines. Seaweed abundance was expressed in terms of frequency, cover, and biomass. Data on biomass were used in the two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), with scores for each substrate type at each site in the analysis of the structural affinities of the seaweed. The results of the study showed that there exist local spatial variations in the distribution patterns of seaweeds. In addition, substrate type, although showing possible effects in some sites, was not the only limiting factor
