Determination of cotton seed vigour: Accelerated ageing test

To evaluate the effect of accelerated ageing on germination, seed moisture content, radicle and plumule elongation of three cotton varieties, an experiment was carried out at the Department of Crop Physiology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during May-June 1996. Seeds of B-622, B-630 and B-765 varieties of cotton were subjected to 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of accelerated ageing. Regression analysis revealed that radicle and plumule elongation decreased with increase in accelerated ageing in all varieties, though the slopes of the three varieties were different. Germination also decreased with increase in accelerated ageing in B-622 and B-630, however, in B-765 there was no systematic trend in germination as the accelerated ageing increased, though the linear regression showed a decreasing trend. Moisture content of the seed increased with accelerated ageing especially with 96 hours of treatment. Germination was correlated with moisture content at the end of accelerated ageing.
