Response of lentil to Bradyrhizobial strains in relation to nitrate reduction and energy

A pot experiment was conducted with three promising mutants of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik. ML-432, N3M-331 and N4M-423) and three Bradyrhizobium leguminosarum strains (BINA-LT 634, BINA-LT 638 and BINA-LT 640) in sand culture to test the strain specificity and energy status of the mutants for nitrate reduction when nodulated with different inocula strains. ML-432 and N3M-331 responded to all the three strains with spectacular yield enhancement. N4M-423 responded to strains BINA-LT 638, BINA-LT 640 and mixed inocula. Strains BINA-LT 638 and BINA-LT 640 responded unequivocally to all the test mutants. In two mutants (ML-432 and N4M-423), nitrate reductase (NR) was lower in both leaf and nodules, but sucrose supply enhanced the activity of NR, indicating energy limitation in these mutants. Conversely, N3M-331 showed higher leaf NR with energy saturation and recorded highest yield. It was concluded that in pot culture, a single specific strain of inoculum is better than mixed inocula, and that energy status of a lentil host for nitrogen fixation and nitrate assimilation depends on the specific lentil genotype
