Effect of levels of potassium and sulfur on growth, yield-contributory characters and yields of lentil

A field experiment was conducted during rabi (winter) 1992/93 season at the research farm of Potash Research Institute of India to study the effect of potassium and sulfur application on growth, yield-contributory characters and yields of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.). There were seven treatments (three levels of potassium x two levels of sulfur and one absolute control). Potassium at 20 kg K2O per ha (K20) significantly increased seed, straw and biological yields. No increase in the yields was observed with further application of potassium, i.e., at 40 kg K2O per ha. Sulfur also significantly enhanced yield, and the highest seed, straw and biological yields were recorded with 40 kg S per ha (S40). The number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and harvest index were unaffected by the treatments; however, the maximum values of these traits were noted at K20 and S40 levels. The lowest values of dry-matter accumulation, yield-contributory characters and yields were obtained in the absolute control (N0 P0 K0 S0). The results of this study can be used as preliminary information in future studies on the effects of potassium and sulfur on lentil
