The International Association for Danube Research (IAD) between tradition and new water management strategies
1999
Bloesch, J. (Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology, Duebendorf (Switzerland))
The traditional qualitative one-dimensional strategy of water protection, based on the technological approach to purify waste water in treatment plants to reduce nutrient and contaminant concentrations and loads, needs to be replaced by the new philosophy of integral water protection. The new paradigma is triggered by revitalizing the understanding of nature: man is integral part rather than dominator. New water management strategies are based on various scientific ecological concepts and congruent with sustainability and catchment approach. To implement the existing environmental laws and regulations, new procedures in social and international co-operation are required. NGO's, such as the International Association for Danube Research (IAD), can play a significant role in this political process
