Changes of the Chlorophyta species in the phytoplankton of the Hungarian section of the Danube river during the last decades (1961-1997)

Kiss, K. | Schmidt, A. (Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Goed (Hungary). Hungarian Danube Research Station)
The paper compares qualitative data on the phytoplankton of the Hungarian section of the River Danube, based on Szemes' studies at the beginning of the sixties (1961-1962) and investigations by the authors during the last two decades. The comparison shows definite changes in the Hungarian stretch of the river: the number of the Pennales (Bacillariophyceae) species decreased (117 species less), but the number of the Chlorophyceae (primarily Chlorococcales) species increased (by 75). The decrease of the Conjugatophyceae (15 species less) was remarkable too. The authors are of the opinion that the main reason for these changes (many more euplanktonic species instead of tychoplanktonic ones) is the canalisation of the river
