The accuracy and efficiency of a newly proposed method for sampling plant material inventory in forest nurseries is discussed. Simultaneously it is compared with already-known foreign sampling procedures, and the effect of using smaller sampling units as well as individual estimation applied to individual conditions in forest nurseries is evaluated. Four plant categories in a single forest nursery complex were studied. The plant numbers were estimated on the total area, by repeated samplings in different combinations, and the results were compared using the corresponding statistical characteristics. It was confirmed that shorter sample units guarantee the required accuracy and they are, on the average, economically twice as effective as 100 cm sample units. It is recommended to estimate the coefficient of variation of plant numbers for the purpose of the experiment planning in the span from 7 to 35%
