The paper draws attention to the UNCED meeting held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro where forestry and the global environment has received major attention. It further highlights the importance of thinning operations for timber stand improvement valorising forest products and enhancing the quality and health of timber stands. It furthermore deals with the aspects of the efficient utilisation analysing the different levels of mechanisation in thinning operations feasible under various socio-economic and forestry conditions. New surveying and construction methods are given for forest road planning and construction
