Postpartum fertility improvement of Australian Brahman cows in Changwat Ang-Thong and Uthai Thani village levels
1996
Pipat Somparn
First part was dealing with reproductive performance in Brahman cows. The data were collected on 450 cows over 4 year period (1992-1995). The second part and third part, a study of pattern of beef production and some factors affecting postpartum fertility of Australian Brahman cows were conducted in changwat Ang-Thong and Uthai Thani by the survey and interviewing of farmers from 126 and 50 farms. The fourth part focused on the synchronization in postpartum anoestrus of lactating cows and the fifth part studied the cost of beef cow production during the 4 year period. The first part showed average gestation period, number of day open, calving interval and AI index of 288.5, 216.4, 503.3 days and 1.6, respectively. The second part, the pattern of beef production depended on cropping system. The major roughage available was local natural grass and rice straw. In the third part of the study that factors affecting postpartum fertility of cows in changwat Ang-Thong and Uthai Thani were combined effects of feeding characteristics and feed availability. Those two factors caused 56.5 percent and 60.4 percent of total variation for the calving interval in the two provinces, respectively. Estrus was synchronized in the fourth part for 14 cows in changwat Ang-Thong and 28 cows in changwat Uthai Thani with ear implant of norgestomet-estrogen combination plus injections of 500 iu PMSG. All cows were inseminated with frozen semen at 48 and 58 hours after the implants have been removed. It was revealed that estrus response and pregnancy rate from the first AI service of all treated cows in changwat Ang-Thong (92.9 and 50.0 percent respectively) were slightly lower (p0.05) than those of changwat Uthai Thani (96.4 and 56.5 percent respectively). The last experiment showed that it took an average of 45.2 and 33.5 baht per day to raise cow under Ang-Thong and Uthai Thani village levels. The cost of production per calf averaged 22,514.6 and 17,074.8 baht in the two provinces, respectively. The cost of investment per calf from cows under synchronization program was found to be 31,337.9 and 18,930.7 baht, accordingly.
