Study on vaccination against vibriosis in sea bass (Lates calcarifer)

Vaccination against vibriosis by three kinds of vaccine was investigated in sea bass (Lates calcarifer). There were Vibrogen 2 (formalin-killed Vibrio anguillarum-V. ordalii) and formalin-killed V. cholerae by commercial and local laboratory preparation. Sea bass with length of 2.0-2.5 inches and average weight of 2.60+-0.15 grams were vaccinated by intraperitoneal injection of 0.1 ml vaccine and one-minute direct immersion. There was no adverse-effect at seven days post-vaccination in which there was no mortality in all vaccinated fish. Fourteen days post-vaccination, all fish were challenged with 0.1 ml bacterial suspension containing number of cell that could kill about 60 percent (LD60) of the previously tested fish which was 7.59*10*[7) cfu/ml. then mortality rates were observed for 14 days. Controls which were intraperitoneally injected with 0.1 ml of 0.85 percent saline had 64 percent mortality while controls which were immersed in 0.85 percent saline had 62.66 percent mortality. There were no mortality in all vaccinated groups by either injection or immersion method of vaccine application. The potential application of vaccine as protection mode against vibriosis. There were sign of cross-reaction between Vibrio spp. in commercial and local prepared vaccine. Further work should be emphasized on the prolonged protection with vaccine application and boostered method.
