Sizing of hardboard manufactured from Acacia mangium willd.

This investigation is aimed at the reduction of water absorption of the hardboard made from Acacia mangium wood by using various kinds of sizing agents such as paraffin and certain vegetable oils, viz. tung oil, soybean oil, and coconut oil at 0 percent, 1 percent and 1.5 percent of dry fiber weight with 1 percent alum of dry fiber weight as a fixing agent. The average thickness, density, and moisture content of the hardboard were 3.15 mm, 1,041.69 kg/cubic m, and 5.70 percent respectively within the range of standard. The water absorption and thickness swelling of sized and unsized hardboards were agree with the standard values (not exceed 40 percent and 30 percent respectively). The 1.5 percent paraffin sized hardboards had the lowest values, i.e., 16.94 percent in water absorption, 11.12 percent in thickness swelling. The 19.79 percent water absorption of the 1 percent paraffin sized board was the second to the lowest value, but was not significantly different. The second lower in thickness swelling, 14.64 percent was 1 percent tung oil sized board which was significantly different from the lowest value, but was not significantly different from other sizing agents. The modulus of rupture values and internal bonding values of the sized hardboard tended to decrease with the increasing amount of the sizing agents. In conclusion, the water absorption and strength properties of the unsized boards were acceptable.
